Reef Octopus Universal CO2 Scrubber Media Reactor
The Reef Octopus Universal CO2 Scrubber (SKU: OCT-C2T90 / Model: C2T-90) is a premium, high-efficiency gas-filtration reactor engineered to eliminate chronically depressed pH levels in modern marine reef aquariums. Achieving an optimal pH threshold of roughly 8.3 is essential for maximizing coral growth rates, skeletal density, and overall metabolic vitality. However, modern heavily insulated homes trap localized carbon dioxide from human respiration, which is constantly sucked in by protein skimmer venturis. This excess CO2 dissolves directly into the water column, turning into carbonic acid and driving pH levels down. By routing your skimmer’s fresh air supply line straight through this high-capacity carbon dioxide scrubbing chamber, ambient CO2 is chemically stripped before it can compromise your water chemistry.
Molded from structural, transparent premium acrylic, this genuine Reef Octopus reactor forms a strictly airtight environment that preserves the potency of color-changing CO2 media. The design includes an adjustable, built-in manual bleeder valve on the top cover cap, providing precise air induction control. The OCT-C2T90 is uniquely optimized for closed-loop recirculation setups when paired with a matching model-specific Reef Octopus skimmer collection lid adapter. Rather than drawing high-volume humid external air continuously, the closed-loop configuration recirculates moisture-rich, low-CO2 air directly from the collection cup. This humid environment prevents the media from drying out prematurely, expanding its lifespan and reducing your long-term operational costs.
Key Features
Maximized Coral Calcification: Accelerates stony coral skeleton building by preventing the daily pH drops typical of indoor aquatic systems.
Flexible Recirculating Architecture: Native barbed hose manifolds support simple conversions into ultra-efficient, media-saving closed loop setups.
Tool-Free Media Servicing: Quick-disconnect true union collar rings allow fast removal of the internal diffuser sponge plates during media changes.
Airtight Structural Seals: Heavy-duty, chemical-resistant interior rubber o-rings isolate gas pathways, preventing raw basement air bypass leaks.
Durable Industrial Hardware: Resists structural fatigue, salt creep cracking, and localized chemical decay inside high-humidity sump cabinets.
Target Performance Applications
Designed to safely support a massive array of small, mid-size, and heavy commercial consumer protein skimmers when matched to appropriate air tubing lines.
Can be operated as a standard ambient draw filter or transformed into a highly advanced recirculating framework when paired with custom Reef Octopus C2C collection cup replacement lids.

- Turn off your protein skimmer's primary injection pump and place the CO2 Scrubber on a stable, flat surface next to your sump.
- Unscrew the heavy threaded top collar ring, lift off the acrylic cap assembly, and remove the upper internal porous safety sponge layer.
- Pour your choice of high-grade color-changing CO2 absorbent granules into the reactor core, leaving a 1-inch clearance space below the top rim.
- Reposition the top protective sponge layer over the media bed, press the top cover cap firmly into position, and hand-tighten the union collar clockwise.
- Connect your skimmer venturi’s soft intake air hose straight onto the designated outlet nozzle of the scrubber lid.
- For ambient setups, leave the inlet open to the room. For recirculating configurations, run a dedicated line from your skimmer's collection cup lid adapter straight into the scrubber's lower inlet barb.
Pro Tips:
- Monitor Color Transformation Closely. When utilizing color-changing soda lime or specialized reef CO2 media, monitor the granules through the transparent acrylic column every few days. The media will gradually shift from a clean white to a deep violet or pinkish-purple hue as it fills with bound carbon dioxide. Once roughly 75% to 80% of the media column has transformed color, swap out the exhausted media immediately to prevent your aquarium pH from swinging back down.
- Never Forget Moisture Control. CO2 absorbent media requires high internal humidity levels to trigger its active chemical binding matrix. If you choose to run the scrubber as an ambient, single-pass open intake filter rather than a closed-loop system, add a tiny layer of pure reverse osmosis (RO) water (approximately 0.5 inches) into the very bottom of the reactor basin below the lower grid plate. This provides continuous evaporative moisture to keep the media active without submerging the granules.
- Hand-Tighten Only. Never use heavy pipe wrenches or pliers to lock down the true-union top cap collars or intake adapters. The structural acrylic and matching union rings are cut to high-tolerance engineering standards. Overtightening with tools will crack the acrylic collar flanges, shear off the barbed line tips, or pinch the rubber o-rings completely out of alignment, destroying the airtight seal required for the reactor to function.
