Reef Octopus Classic 1000HOB Replacement Output Elbow (ROP-BH1000-OUTEB)
The Reef Octopus Classic 1000HOB Output Elbow (SKU: ROP-BH1000-OUTEB) is an authentic factory-spec replacement plumbing component distributed by CoralVue to preserve the smooth gravity drain dynamics of your hang-on back filtration loop. On an external HOB protein skimmer, the output plumbing takes the massive volume of processed water from the skimmer body and funnels it safely back over the glass rim. Because the return line relies entirely on an open gravity drain rather than pump pressure, it uses a wider 32mm pipe system to prevent structural bottlenecks. Over years of operational service, removing this elbow to rinse out trapped salt crusts or mechanical sponge debris can wear down the slip friction walls, or an accidental bump during lighting adjustments can crack the mold, leading to an external leak.
Replacing a cracked or loose-fitting return pipe with this genuine OEM part ensures absolute safety for your flooring. The inner walls are custom-machined to match the native flow velocity of the Classic 1000HOB system, allowing water to exit fast enough to prevent a dangerous internal backlog. By keeping water moving smoothly, this 90-degree adapter stops water from backing up into the skimmer neck, allowing the active microbubbles to build a steady foam column without experiencing sudden collection cup flooding or erratic water levels.
Key Features
True Factory Sizing Tolerances: Precision molded to match the unique dimensions of the Classic 1000HOB (BH-1000) discharge system.
Thin-Walled High-Volume Bore: Maximizes internal area to lower backpressure and keep water levels inside the skimmer body stable.
Reef-Safe Marine Grade PVC: Built entirely out of stable, non-leaching plastics that are completely unaffected by active chemical filtration or ozone gas exposure.
Simple Slip-Fit Assembly: Designed to mount tightly without the use of permanent tools, ensuring quick access during regular cleaning tasks.
Verified Hardware Compatibility
Reef Octopus Classic HOB Series: Sized explicitly for the Classic 1000HOB (alternatively labeled as the BH-1000) hang-on back external skimmer.
(Note: This adapter is configured exclusively for 32mm metric output plumbing lines. Larger skimmer frames, such as the Classic 2000HOB, utilize a wider 40mm output infrastructure and require a different replacement SKU).
What’s Included:
(1) Reef Octopus Replacement Classic 1000HOB 32mm Output Elbow Fitting
(Note: Clear skimmer bodies, return downpipes, defoaming output sponges, microbubble boxes, and intake pipes are sold separately).

- Turn off your protein skimmer's Aquatrance pump to stop the active water column from flowing out of the skimmer body.
- Carefully pull the existing return line pipe or microbubble box away from the broken or loose output elbow.
- Gently twist the old 32mm elbow counter-clockwise to break any dried salt crust and pull it off the main skimmer exit nipple.
- Wipe down the external acrylic connection point with a soft cloth to clean off any built-up algae or coralline scale.
- Push your new ROP-BH1000-OUTEB replacement elbow firmly onto the skimmer exit port, turning it slightly to seat the slip socket flush.
- Re-attach your downpipe extensions or defoaming sponges, turn the pump back on, and check the joint for a dry, leak-free seal.
Pro Tips:
- Do Not Use Permanent PVC Cement or Glue. Even though standard home plumbing repairs rely on permanent solvent welding, you should never use PVC cement, superglue, or plumbing epoxies to install this replacement output elbow. The return assembly is engineered as a tight, unglued friction fit so you can easily pull the pipes apart for routine maintenance. Gluing this elbow permanently prevents you from removing the return downpipes or cleaning out hidden organic sludge inside the bend.
- Dissolve Stubborn Salt Creep to Protect the Acrylic. If the old elbow is cemented in place by years of dried salt creep, do not pull or yank on the plumbing sideways. Forcing a stuck pipe can easily crack the clear cast acrylic body of the skimmer, creating an expensive leak. Instead, wrap a towel soaked in hot tap water around the stuck joint for 5 minutes. The heat and moisture will instantly melt away the internal salt crust, allowing the pipes to slide apart smoothly with no tools required.
- Prevent Air Gurgling with Proper Venting Alignment. When pushing your return plumbing extensions back into the new output elbow, ensure the downward pipes drop perfectly straight into the aquarium. If the elbow is twisted sideways or the downpipe sits at an angle, it can trap a large air pocket inside the bend. This trapped air blocks the gravity drain flow, causing the skimmer to make an annoying gurgling noise and creating erratic water levels inside the filtration column.
