Reef Octopus BioChurn 90EXT HOB Biopellet Reactor

The Reef Octopus BioChurn 90EXT is a specialized external biopellet reactor designed for aquarists who need powerful nutrient export but lack internal sump space. Unlike internal models, the 90EXT features a sealed body and a robust hang-on-back (HOB) bracket, allowing it to mount securely to the exterior rim of a tank or sump. It utilizes a patent-pending churn plate that creates a high-energy cyclone motion, ensuring biopellets remain suspended and fully fluidized to maximize bacterial activity.

By effectively processing nitrates and phosphates, the BioChurn 90EXT helps maintain the low-nutrient conditions necessary for a healthy reef environment. It is powered by the reliable Aquatrance 800 pump, which is positioned inside the aquarium or sump to feed the external reaction chamber. This configuration provides the benefits of a professional recirculating reactor in a format that is accessible for smaller systems up to 100 gallons.

Key Features

• Sealed External Operation: Engineered with high-quality seals and heavy-duty acrylic for safe operation outside of the water.
• Cyclone Fluidization: The patent-pending dispersant plate ensures pellets "churn" evenly, preventing the channeling often seen in vertical reactors.
• Independent Flow Control: Recirculating architecture allows you to tune the media tumble rate separately from the system throughput.
• High-Volume Capacity: Large reaction chambers accommodate significant amounts of biopellet media for high-nutrient export.
• Professional Grade Materials: Constructed from precision-cut, cell-cast acrylic for maximum durability and clarity.
• Easy Maintenance Ports: Features oversized unions and secure lids for straightforward media replacement and cleaning.

Ideal For

• Large-scale reef systems and commercial displays require robust nitrate and phosphate control.
• Hobbyists with dedicated filtration rooms where equipment is plumbed externally from the sump.
• High-bio-load aquariums with heavy fish populations that demand constant carbon dosing.
• Advanced aquarists who require precise control over the contact time and fluidization of their biopellet media.
• Situations where internal sump space is fully occupied by skimmers, refugiums, or other equipment.

  1. Check the reactor body and lid O-ring for any debris or damage before assembly.
  2. Add up to 400ml of biopellet media to the chamber; do not overfill to allow for proper fluidization.
  3. Secure the lid firmly to ensure a watertight seal for external operation.
  4. Mount the reactor to the outside of your tank or sump using the HOB bracket.
  5. Place the Aquatrance 800 pump inside the tank/sump and connect the tubing to the reactor inlet.
  6. Plug in the pump and verify that the media is "churning" in a circular motion.
  7. Monitor all external connections for leaks during the first 48 hours.
Pro Tips
Check the lid O-ring monthly. Because this reactor sits outside of the tank, a clean seal is critical. Every time you add media, wipe the O-ring and the lid surface with a damp cloth to prevent salt creep from breaking the seal.

Direct the return line into a high-flow area near the skimmer. Biopellet reactors can lower oxygen levels. By directing the output into your skimmer or near a powerhead, you ensure the water is re-oxygenated and the bacterial mulm is exported.

Use a small amount of silicone grease on the lid threads. This makes it much easier to open and close the sealed unit for media changes without putting unnecessary stress on the HOB bracket or the acrylic body.
