90W Inline High Output UV Sterilizer for Large Marine Systems and Ponds Up to 1,000 Gallons

The IceCap 90w High Output UV Sterilizer is a heavy-duty water treatment system distributed by CoralVue to bring pristine water clarity, advanced redox balancing, and biological disease control to marine reef exhibits, large freshwater community aquariums, and commercial outdoor ponds. Managing uncontained water column outbreaks—such as microscopic single-celled green hair algae spores, bacterial blooms, white cloudy water, or free-swimming protozoan fish parasites like marine ich and velvet—can be exceptionally difficult using chemical biocides or mechanical filter socks alone. The IC-HOUV-90W provides a non-chemical alternative, utilizing concentrated ultraviolet light beams to permanently alter the genetic code of target pathogens as they pass through the chamber, preventing them from multiplying.

What makes this inline system highly effective is its industrial single-ended design and massive water contact path. Rather than relying on multiple smaller, low-output bulbs plugged into a complicated manifold, the IC-HOUV-90W utilizes a single 35.2-inch high-output bulb that runs at 800mA of target current. This extended contact path ensures that water passing through the 43-inch main polymer shell spends more time under the intense UVC rays. When plumbed at slower, calibrated turnover speeds, this high exposure dose strips out microscopic pests without disturbing the beneficial nitrifying bacterial colonies safely anchored inside your biological rock beds and sump media blocks.

Key Features:

  • Industrial Long-Life Lamp Life: The premium low-pressure germicidal lamp retains full operational output up to 10,000 continuous burn hours before tracking replacement lines.

  • Polished Quartz Isolation Chamber: Heavy-wall protective sleeve keeps raw tank water safely isolated from the electrical filaments while providing high transmission efficiency.

  • Safe Single-Ended Power Harness: Employs a quick-disconnect rubber over-molded lamp socket end cap that seals the primary connection points away from salt spray.

Note: This inline water disinfection module is an external plumbing system that must be powered by a separate return pump loop. It should always run downstream of mechanical filtration pads to prevent organic debris from shadowing the UV light rays.

Ideal For:

  • Reef aquariums dealing with water clarity issues
  • Freshwater tanks experiencing green water blooms
  • Systems requiring additional water sterilization support
  • Medium to large aquariums with external filtration
  • Hobbyists running sump-based systems

Pro Tips:

  • Match wattage to tank volume before buying. The 27W is rated for marine tanks up to 140 gallons, the 40W up to 400 gallons, and the 90W up to 1,000 gallons. Running an undersized model on a larger system will significantly reduce sterilization effectiveness.
  • Do not exceed the rated maximum flow rate for sterilization. Flow rate determines UV contact time. Exceeding the rated GPH reduces the UVC dose delivered to the water. For disease treatment, run the unit at or below the rated sterilization flow, not the maximum clarification flow.
  • Replace the lamp at 10,000 hours regardless of visible output. T5 UVC lamp output degrades well before the lamp stops glowing. Mark the installation date and replace on schedule. A lamp that appears lit is not necessarily still delivering effective sterilization.
  • Keep the quartz sleeve clean. Mineral deposits reduce UVC transmission through the water. Inspect and clean the sleeve at each maintenance interval. Replacement sleeves are available if deposits cannot be removed without damaging the surface.
  • Have a spare lamp and sleeve on hand. When the lamp reaches the end of its life or a sleeve cracks, having replacements immediately available avoids downtime in a running system.
  • Never look directly at the glowing UV bulb while it is powered on. When testing your wiring or verifying that your new 90W ballast is firing up correctly, never plug the electrical cord in while the bulb is sitting exposed on your workbench. The high-output germicidal light emitted by this lamp outputs high-frequency shortwave UVC radiation. Looking directly at this raw light beam for even a few seconds can cause immediate and severe ocular burns, retinal damage, and painful skin irritation. Always make sure the lamp is fully inserted and sealed inside the black polymer vessel before restoring electrical power.

Instructions:

  1. Carefully unpack the 43-inch housing vessel, remove the quartz sleeve from its protective tube, and inspect the clear glass for hairline cracks or transit fractures.
  2. Ensure the specialized flat blue silicone rubber sealing gasket sits perfectly level over the open rim lip of the quartz sleeve before inserting it into the main vessel tracking.
  3. Slide the quartz tube smoothly into the center bottom groove of the black housing, then thread the large retaining nut clockwise by hand until firmly locked. Warning: Never use plastic wrenches or metal pipe tools, as over-tightening will easily shatter the brittle glass.
  4. Perform a brief leak test by running tap water through the unpowered chamber to verify the blue gasket creates a tight, drip-free seal under physical line pressure.
  5. Carefully insert the 90-watt UV lamp into the open quartz sleeve cavity, press the 4-pin electronic harness cap over the bulb pins, and screw the back cord retainer down snug.
  6. Mount the non-waterproof ballast brick inside a dry cabinet area away from salt spray, hook the unit up downstream of your mechanical filtration pump, and plug it into a grounded GFCI outlet.

Safety Notes:

  • Never operate the unit without water flow.
  • Do not expose eyes or skin to UV light.
  • Disconnect power before servicing or bulb replacement.
