Reef Octopus KS250 Nilson Kalk Reactor
The Reef Octopus KS250 Nilson Kalk Reactor is a heavy-duty solution for automating the supplementation of calcium and alkalinity in large-scale reef aquaria. Designed for systems up to 320 gallons, this reactor utilizes a high-torque, low-RPM motor to gently mix calcium hydroxide (Kalkwasser). This motorized stirring ensures the solution remains at maximum saturation while minimizing exposure to air, which can neutralize the effectiveness of the Kalkwasser through carbonation.
The KS250 is engineered to maintain a high and stable pH level, which is critical for the skeletal growth of stony corals and the precipitation of unwanted phosphates. The reactor's design allows undissolved particles to settle at the bottom, ensuring that only the clear, highly concentrated liquid is dosed into your system. Built with professional-grade, hand-polished acrylic and featuring secure thumb-screw access, the KS250 is a robust and reliable addition to any advanced high-volume filtration setup.
Key Features
• High-Torque Stirring Motor: Features a powerful motor designed to rotate mixing blades slowly to prevent the solution from settling.
• Large-Scale pH Stabilization: Effectively buffers and raises aquarium pH levels to support healthy calcification.
• 1/4-Inch Quick Connects: Includes push-to-connect fittings for a fast, leak-free setup with standard 1/4-inch tubing.
• Airtight Reaction Chamber: Keeps your Kalkwasser fresh and potent by blocking atmospheric CO2 entry.
• Heavy-Duty Acrylic Build: Crafted from thick, high-quality acrylic for maximum durability in marine environments.
• Oversized Thumb Screws: Provide easy access to the reaction chamber for quick and clean media refills.
Ideal For
• Large reef aquariums and commercial displays up to 320 gallons.
• SPS-dominant systems where consistent alkalinity and calcium levels are vital for growth.
• Hobbyists struggling with low pH who need a high-volume automated buffering solution.
• Advanced reef keepers using a controller to manage precise, intermittent stirring and dosing.
• Systems where a vertical, space-efficient reactor is preferred over large, open limewater vats.
*The Kalkwasser Stirrer uses a 20w motor that has a lifetime of about 1500 hours. Please don’t run the unit continuously.

- Place the KS250 in a level, stable position near your sump or filtration area.
- Connect your RO/DI feed and dosing lines to the 1/4" quick-connect ports.
- Remove the lid and add the appropriate amount of calcium hydroxide powder (Kalkwasser).
- Fill the chamber with RO/DI water and replace the lid, tightening all thumb screws evenly.
- Connect your feed pump (sold separately) to the inlet of the reactor.
- Plug the motor into a timer or controller; do not run the stirrer 24/7.
- Program your timer to run for 5 minutes every 2 hours to maintain saturation.
Pro Tips
Do not run the stirrer motor continuously. The motor is designed for periodic operation to maintain saturation. Running it for 5 minutes every 2 hours is sufficient for most systems and will significantly extend the life of the motor.
Ensure your dosing pump is a slow-volume peristaltic pump. Adding Kalkwasser too quickly to a large system can cause rapid pH spikes that may stress corals. A slow, steady drip into a high-flow area of the sump is the safest method.
Clean the internal stirrer and base monthly. Calcium carbonate can accumulate on the motor shaft and at the bottom of the reactor. A monthly rinse and occasional soak in a weak citric acid solution will prevent motor strain and ensure proper mixing.
