- Ensure both 40mm metric pipe ends are cut perfectly square and thoroughly deburred.
- Clean the pipe ends and the internal sockets of the coupling with a dedicated PVC cleaner.
- Apply a layer of PVC primer to both the pipe ends and the inside of the coupling.
- Apply a liberal coat of PVC solvent cement to both the pipe and the coupling sockets.
- Push the pipes into the coupling until they hit the internal center stop, giving a quarter-turn to distribute the cement evenly.
- Hold firmly for 45 seconds. Allow at least 4 hours to cure before introducing high-pressure water or full drainage flow.
Pro Tips:
- Metric vs. Standard 1.5-Inch. A 40mm metric coupling will not fit standard US 1.5-inch pipe. 40mm is approximately 1.57 inches, while standard US 1.5-inch pipe has a 1.90-inch OD. Always confirm your pipe diameter with a caliper before starting your plumbing project.
- Use Clear Primer. To maintain the professional look of your grey UPVC plumbing, use clear PVC primer rather than purple. This prevents unsightly stains and keeps your filtration area looking like a factory Reef Octopus installation.
- Repairing Rigid Lines. When repairing a large-diameter line that cannot be moved or flexed, a standard coupling can be difficult to install. For these situations, we recommend using a 40mm Metric Union, which allows you to "drop-in" a repair section much more easily.
