- No Sump Required: Premium hang-on-back (HOB) design hooks directly onto the rim of your display tank, allowing for industrial-grade filtration without a sump.
- External Pump Layout: The high-volume Aquatrance 2000s pump is mounted externally underneath the skimmer chassis, minimizing needed wall clearance.
- Zero Heat Transfer: By positioning the pump motor outside the aquarium water column, it eliminates heat transfer to keep your tank temperatures stable.
- Surface Skimmer Box: Includes an adjustable surface-skimming intake attachment to continuously strip oily organic film from the water's surface.
- High-Capacity Low Profile: Built with a space-saving rectangular body footprint (10 in x 4 in) that hugs the back glass of large marine displays.
- Quiet & Calm Output: Outfitted with an integrated air silencer and a bubble-dampening discharge assembly to eliminate micro-bubble feedback.

Reef Octopus Classic 2000-HOB Protein Skimmer
The Reef Octopus Classic 2000-HOB (SKU: CLSC-2000HOB) is a high-capacity hang-on-back protein skimmer designed to deliver professional-grade organic waste removal to large marine aquariums up to 200 gallons without the need for an underlying sump system. Engineered specifically for serious hobbyists with standalone reef setups or heavy-bioload fish-only systems, the Classic 2000-HOB maximizes space efficiency. By positioning its powerful Aquatrance 2000s pinwheel pump externally underneath the main skimmer housing rather than inside the tank, you only need 4 inches of clearance behind your aquarium while completely isolating pump motor heat from your sensitive livestock.
Constructed entirely from premium, heavy-duty cast acrylic, this external hang-on unit features an adjustable surface skimmer box that actively skims the water line to break up the organic slick that impedes vital gas exchange and light penetration. Inside the large reaction chamber, the Aquatrance pump aggressively chops air and water into a dense cloud of micro-bubbles, stripping out dissolved proteins before they can degrade into harmful nitrates and phosphates. With its massive collection cup, simple O-ring adjustments, and modular construction, the Classic 2000-HOB is a powerhouse option for pristine water quality.
Key Features
Heavy-Duty Sump-Less Performance: Easily hangs on the rim of large aquariums, bringing advanced filtration to non-plumbed systems.
Aquatrance 2000s Pinwheel Pump: Infuses a massive 720 L/H of air pull into the reaction chamber while running at an efficient 18 Watts.
Dual Chamber Internal Geometry: Separates the chaotic bubble reaction zone from the water return chamber to drastically limit micro-bubble bypass.
Surface Degreaser Attachment: Continuously strips protein-heavy surface film to improve water clarity and light penetration.
Bubble-Dampening Assembly: Utilizes specialized foam sponges to calm the discharge water column as it returns to the display.

- Assemble the intake piping, surface skimmer box, and the external Aquatrance 2000s pump according to the product manual diagram.
- Hang the skimmer body securely onto the back or side plastic frame of your aquarium, leveling the chassis with the plastic adjustment screws at the base.
- Manually fill the skimmer body compartments with aquarium water until the internal level reaches approximately 8 inches (20cm).
- Pinch or close the air silencer tube completely to prevent the pump from "coughing" dry air, then plug the power cord into a GFCI outlet.
- Once the pump primes and starts pushing water steadily, release the airline to begin active micro-bubble injection.
- Adjust the collection cup height using the integrated rubber O-ring to position the foam line right at the lower base of the inner neck.
Pro Tips:
- Priming via the Airline. When turning on the Classic 2000-HOB for the first time or after a deep cleaning, if the pump struggles to catch its siphon, cover the air intake hole on the silencer with your thumb for a few seconds. This creates a temporary internal vacuum that forces water into the pump chamber, quickly pulling a full siphon.
- Manage the Output Sponges. The black and blue output sponges are highly effective at capturing stray micro-bubbles, but they will trap detritus over time. Pull and rinse these sponges under a tap weekly during cup maintenance to prevent restriction, which can cause water to back up and flood the skimmer collection cup.
- Keep the Venturi Unclogged. Because the pump is positioned underneath the skimmer body, dust and salt spray can settle into the small gray venturi nipple where the airline connects. If you notice a drop in micro-bubble volume or the water line inside the body keeps rising on its own, clear the nipple with a toothpick or run a tiny squeeze of warm RO/DI water down the airline to dissolve any salt plugs.
