    • Genuine OEM Direct Replacement: Authentic factory-spec internal drive tracking shim washer engineered explicitly for large-frame Reef Octopus variable-speed DC pumps.
    • Low-Friction Wear Barrier: Acts as a specialized mechanical spacer between the heavy magnetic rotor face and the rear wall of the stator well to eliminate drag.
    • Prevents Wet-End Casing Friction: Maintains precise internal tracking clearances so spinning normal propellers or pinwheel arrays do not scrape internal volute housings.
    • Saltwater-Inert Ceramic Composite Matrix: Fabricated from premium, wear-resistant synthetic composite rated to handle intense rotational heat and calcium friction.
    • Suppresses Mechanical Rattle Hums: Eliminates micro-slack along the horizontal plane of the axle shaft to cushion startup shock and stop low-end vibrations.
    • Drop-In Maintenance Component: Slides smoothly onto your existing polished ceramic axle shaft during seasonal pump cleanings without requiring specialized tools.

Reef Octopus VarioS 6 & VarioS 6S Replacement Impeller Shaft Shim Washer (ROP-VAR6-SHIM)

The Reef Octopus VarioS 6 Impeller Shaft Shim Washer (SKU: ROP-VAR6-SHIM) is an authentic factory-spec internal flat wear washer distributed by CoralVue to preserve the smooth axial tracking, silent motor synchronization, and precise physical clearances of your large-frame controllable pump. While hidden from view inside the fully enclosed wet end of the pump, this tiny spacing shim handles critical hydraulic balancing duties. When a high-capacity 36V motor like the VarioS 6 return or VarioS 6S skimmer engine active-ramps across its 5 variable velocity stages, the intense magnetic flux fields pull the heavy impeller core backward into the stator channel with considerable mechanical pressure.

Without this specialized low-friction shim resting on the axle shaft right behind the impeller hub, the raw plastic edge of the spinning rotor would rub continuously against the back wall of the motor cavity. This friction quickly chews up the casing polymer, creates intense motor chatter, builds up heat, and can cause the engine to shut down from overloading. Because this washer is miniature and completely clear, it is very easily lost down the drain or dropped into the sump tank unnoticed during seasonal maintenance teardowns. Operating your large-frame system without this exact original factory spacer causes severe imbalance, leading to chipped impeller pins, split ceramic shafts, or total motor core failure. Installing a fresh genuine shim instantly realigns your running tolerances back to original specifications.

    Key Features

    • Precision Calibrated Thickness Profile: Cut to exact factory millimeter tolerances to optimize the water-tight containment field without causing startup resistance.

    • Ozone & Acid Solution Immune: Advanced polymer composite compound will not become brittle, swell, distort, or dissolve during aggressive citric acid descaling baths.

    • Polished Surface Interface Geometry: Glass-smooth face allows the magnetic drive core to spin up to peak velocities with minimal resistance, keeping your power usage efficient.

    • (Note: This replacement item contains the single micro flat shim washer ring only. Polished ceramic axle shafts, rubber end cushion boots, replacement impellers, and complete motor stators are sold separately).

    Verified Hardware Compatibility

    • Reef Octopus Large-Frame Circulation Engines: Designed natively as the factory matching internal shaft washer for the Reef Octopus VarioS-6 Controllable Return Water Pump and legacy RODC-5500 Circulation Pump.

    • Reef Octopus Large-Frame Fractionating Engines: Serves as the correct internal drive track spacer for the Reef Octopus VarioS-6S Controllable Skimmer Pump and legacy RODC-5500S Needlewheel Pump.

    • (Note: This large-frame spacer is sized exclusively to accommodate the thicker axle diameter of the 6-series line. It will not fit smaller VarioS-2/2S or VarioS-4/4S drive assemblies, which utilize a smaller alternative shim footprint under part number ROP-VAR24-SHIM).

    What’s Included:

    • (1) Reef Octopus Replacement VarioS-6 / VarioS-6S Clear Low-Friction Impeller Shaft Spacing Shim Washer

    • (Note: Main ceramic shafts, rubber dampening end caps, magnetic rotors, and volute covers are sold separately).

    Technical Specs:

    • Official Manufacturing Title: Reef Octopus VarioS 6 Replacement Flat Washer

    • SKU / Factory Part Identifier: ROP-VAR6-SHIM

    • Placement Location: Rear Core Axle Shaft (Between Magnet Hub and Stator Base)

    • Material Matrix Composition: Low-Friction Chemical-Resistant Engineering Composite

    • Primary Function: Rotor Tracking Spacing, Heat Reduction Friction Barrier, & Vibration Dampening

    1. Turn off your pump controller and pull your primary power supply transformer from the wall to eliminate all live electricity before servicing the pump.
    2. Disconnect your plumbing unions or air venturi lines, pull the pump block out of your sump cavity, and place it down on a clean, light-colored towel.
    3. Twist the front volute cover plate counter-clockwise to unlock the bayonet tabs, slide it off, and carefully pull the magnetic impeller straight out of the motor core well.
    4. Clean the polished ceramic shaft to clear away any stuck detritus slime or baked-on calcium crust, and inspect the rear of the stator cavity.
    5. Take your new ROP-VAR6-SHIM flat washer and slide it directly onto the ceramic axle shaft, pushing it all the way down until it sits flat against the bottom rear seat.
    6. Slide your clean magnetic impeller back over the shaft, reattach your rubber housing seal gasket, lock your volute cover back into place clockwise, and reinstall your pump.

    Pro Tips:

    • Always Use a Light-Colored Towel During Wet End Teardowns. Because this spacing shim washer is clear and very small, it is incredibly easy to lose when you open your pump. When you pull the heavy magnetic impeller out of its motor cavity, the rush of trapped water inside will frequently wash the shim right off the shaft. If you are cleaning your equipment over a dark sink basin or directly inside a messy sump cabinet, the shim can vanish down the drain or get lost in the detritus before you realize it's gone. Always take the pump over to a clean, flat countertop lined with a bright white towel to catch the parts safely.
    • Never Double-Stack Shims to Fix a Noise Issue. If your VarioS 6 return line or VarioS 6S skimmer engine has started to develop a rattling noise, never try to resolve it by sliding two shims onto the axle shaft at the same time. While it might seem like adding another washer would cushion the rattle, double-stacking pushes the magnetic rotor too far forward in the chamber. This misalignment will cause the spinning blades or pinwheels to rub hard against the front volute face, chewing up the plastic casing and instantly locking up the motor.
    • Soak the Shim in Citric Acid to Clean Off Trapped Scaling. When performing a quarterly deep clean of your pump mechanics, always slide this micro washer off the ceramic shaft and clean it by hand. Because it sits right at the high-friction point behind the magnet hub, hard calcium carbonate scale will steadily bake onto its flat surfaces. Running the pump with a scale-crusted shim creates an abrasive surface that can score your shaft and damage the rotor hub. A quick 15-minute soak in a warm bath of water mixed with citric acid powder will safely dissolve the scale without wearing down the thin polymer.
