The Reef Octopus SRO 5000EXT (Super Reef Octopus) is a heavy-duty external recirculating protein skimmer designed for large marine systems up to 500 gallons. Unlike standard internal skimmers, the 5000EXT utilizes a recirculating design where the Bubble Blaster HY-5000S pump focuses entirely on mixing air and water within the skimmer body. A separate feed pump (sold separately) is used to move water from the sump into the skimmer, allowing the aquarist to perfectly tune the dwell time for maximum nutrient export.
The SRO series is famous for the Bubble Blaster pump, which is widely considered one of the most reliable and efficient pinwheel pumps in the industry. These pumps feature a silicon carbide shaft and bearings for extreme wear resistance and a digital control circuit that monitors the motor's status. CoralVue, Inc. and Reef Octopus hereby guarantee this product to be free from defects in material and workmanship for a period of:
- Five (5) year warranty on pump body/housing
- Three (3) year warranty on Reef Octopus-branded controller
- One (1) year warranty on Power Supply, Impeller (and components), Rotor, Rear Bushing, and Gaskets
Warranty is activated on the date of purchase.
This Standard Limited Warranty applies and is limited as follows:
- To the product only as long as it remains in the possession of the original purchaser.
- To the product that has not been subject to accident, misuse or abuse.
- To the product that has not been modified, altered, defaced, or had repairs made or attempted by other than CoralVue, Inc.
- That CoralVue be immediately notified in writing within ten (10) days of first knowledge of defect by owner or his agent.
- That CoralVue, Inc. shall be given first opportunity to make any repairs, replacements or corrections to the defective construction within a reasonable period of time.
- Under no circumstances shall CoralVue and/or the Manufacturer be liable by virtue of this warranty or otherwise for damage to any person or property whatsoever for any special, indirect, secondary or consequential damages of any nature however arising out of the use or inability to use because of the product defect.
Verify the Bubble Blaster HY-5000S pump is correctly attached and all union O-rings are in place.
Install the skimmer on a level surface. For external installations, ensure the unit is secure and level.
Connect a dedicated feed pump (not included) to the 1-inch intake.
Plug the HY-5000S pump into a GFCI-protected outlet.
Start the feed pump first to fill the skimmer body before powering on the Bubble Blaster pump.
Adjust the gate valve until the internal water level reaches the transition of the body and neck.
Check for leaks at all connections during the first 48 hours of operation.
Pro Tips:
- Dwell Time is Key. Since the 5000EXT is a recirculating unit, you can optimize the "dwell time" (how long water stays in the skimmer). For heavily stocked tanks, a slower feed rate (closer to 500 GPH) often results in a darker, more concentrated skimmate.
- Metric Plumbing Integration. The SRO 5000EXT utilizes a 50mm Metric output and a 32mm Metric recirculating line. If you are hard-plumbing the unit, we recommend using Metric Union Couplings to ensure the skimmer can be easily disconnected for annual maintenance.
- Bubble Blaster Care. The HY-5000S is a workhorse, but calcium buildup can affect performance over time. We recommend a full teardown and vinegar or citric acid soak of the pump every 6 months to maintain peak air-draw and silent operation.
