  • Available Through Authorized Retailer
  • Thermal Responsive Automation: Features an integrated temperature probe that automatically scales the fan speed up or down based on the ambient heat under your hood.
  • Proportional Speed Ramping: Begins to steadily accelerate its output at 90°F (32°C) and scales continuously until achieving maximum cooling velocity at 110°F (43°C).
  • Minimizes Tank Heat Transfer: Expels stagnant, hot air pockets from enclosed light canopies and equipment stands to prevent dangerous aquarium water temperature spikes.
  • Safe Low-Voltage Operation: Runs on a safe 5V DC micro-current architecture powered by a universal USB connector and an included standard wall outlet adapter.
  • Long Reach Connectivity: Features an extra-long 78-inch main power lead paired with an independent 16-inch thermistor sensor cord for flexible, strategic placement.
  • Protects Under-Cabinet Gear: Enhances continuous air circulation inside damp filtration zones, keeping sensitive electronic controllers cool and protecting them from sweat.

Reef Octopus 3-Inch Variable Speed USB Smart Fan

The Reef Octopus OCTO AF-80 3-Inch USB Smart Fan (SKU: OCT-AF80) is an intelligent, thermally managed ventilation solution engineered to actively regulate heat and humidity profiles inside enclosed aquarium canopies, light hoods, and equipment cabinets. High-output reef lighting arrays, ballast hubs, and multi-pump networks generate immense localized heat inside cabinetry. Left unvented, this stagnant thermal blanket is naturally absorbed into your sump or display water, forcing your primary aquarium chiller to work overtime or inducing dangerous livestock-threatening temperature spikes. The AF-80 intercepts this loop, dynamically exchanging stagnant dead-air zones with a smooth, continuous draft.

The core engineering advantage of the OCTO Smart Fan is its on-board proportional thermal controller. Rather than blasting continuously at full speed—which accelerates unnecessary evaporation and creates loud acoustic noise—the AF-80 monitors environmental levels via a dedicated 16-inch thermistor probe line. The fan remains whisper-quiet at baseline, but the moment local temperatures cross 90°F (32°C), its internal logic processor gently ramps up the RPM. If the enclosure continues to warm, the fan scales smoothly upward, matching the heat load until it hits peak volume performance at 110°F (43°C). Operating on a safe, low-voltage 5V DC grid, this compact 3-inch fan delivers the precise air-exchange loops required to extend the service life of your premium tank automation equipment.

Key Features:

  • Dynamic Speed Optimization: Eliminates rigid on/off cycles by matching the fan’s active CFM delivery directly to the real-time heat load of your stand.

  • Whisper Quiet Blade Dynamics: Specially balanced multi-blade wheel assembly pushes up to 55 CFM of air without generating loud rattling sounds.

  • Substantial Installation Reach: Outfitted with an expansive 78-inch (2-meter) power trunk line to easily weave through complex media stands down to a power strip.

  • Plug and Play Simplicity: Zero custom wiring or programming steps required; simply position the probe near your light strip or ballasts and plug the USB into the wall.

  • Rust-Resistant Composites: Molded from a high-density polymer casing built to handle the humid air, salt vapor, and moisture spray of raw sump areas.

Operational Ramping Matrix:

  • Below 90°F (32°C): Low-RPM Baseline Air Circulation

  • 90°F to 110°F (32°C – 43°C): Proportional Velocity Scaling (25 to 55 CFM)

  • Above 110°F (43°C): Continuous Peak Volume Cooling Performance

NOT INTENDED FOR CONTINUOUS USE. The fan is rated for 2000 hours.

Pro Tips:

  • Position the Thermistor Carefully. Do not let the copper thermistor sensor tip touch hot metal surfaces like an LED fixture's raw aluminum heat sink or ballast casing. The probe is engineered to measure ambient air currents. Direct contact with piping-hot metal housings can trick the smart logic board into running at peak volume speeds prematurely, causing the fan to run louder and dry out your sump reservoir faster than necessary.
  • Configure an Exhaust Orientation. When mounting the AF-80 inside an aquarium canopy, position the fan face to blow air out of the enclosure rather than pushing air down onto the water. Pulling damp, humid air out of the hood and venting it into the room creates a natural low-pressure draft that brings fresh, cool air inside. This strategy optimizes cooling efficiency and stops salt spray from caking the fan blades.
  • This is a Smart Regulator, Not a Continuous Blower. Keep in mind that the OCTO Smart Fan is explicitly rated for 2,000 hours of active lifetime and is built around dynamic thermal ramping. It is not designed to run at full speed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year like an industrial utility blower. To get the longest life out of your fan, use it in areas where it can turn down or rest when your display lights turn off and ambient temperatures drop at night.

Instructions:

  1. Map out a clear exhaust or intake pathway on your wood cabinet panel or acrylic light canopy shroud matching the 3.15-inch profile.
  2. Secure the AF-80 frame over your vent opening using standard mounting screws passed through the 72mm center-to-center corner holes.
  3. Route the 16-inch thermistor probe line upward and secure it near your primary heat generator, such as directly under an LED cluster or above a ballast box.
  4. Let the main 78-inch power line drop cleanly out the back of your display cabinetry, keeping it clear of any moving water plumbing paths.
  5. Couple the standard male USB terminal tail directly into the provided low-voltage 5V DC wall adapter block.
  6. Push the power adapter firmly into a designated GFCI safety outlet wall bank to activate the smart thermostat circuit automatically.
