Reef Octopus CalReact 3000D Dual Chamber DC Calcium Reactor

The Reef Octopus CalReact 3000D (SKU: OCT-CALR3000D, also recognized across legacy series as the SRO-CR3000D) is a high-capacity, dual-tower aragonite-dissolving filtration system engineered for large, densely stocked marine reef displays up to 580 gallons. In mature reef aquariums packed with small polyp stony (SPS) corals, mineral uptake can easily exhaust traditional liquid dosing regimens, spiking monthly maintenance costs and destabilizing water parameters. The CalReact 3000D automates mineral replenishment by continuously dissolving ancient crushed coral skeletons inside a highly controlled, acidic environment, adding bio-available calcium, carbonates, magnesium, and essential trace elements directly back into your water column.

The defining breakthrough of the CalReact 3000D is its Dual-Chamber Architecture. Traditional single-chamber reactors discharge an effluent with an extremely low, acidic pH (often between 6.5–6.7) due to the heavy injection of carbon dioxide (CO2). If left unbuffered, this acidic trickle can steadily depress your display tank's overall pH. The 3000D passes this raw acidic effluent through a secondary 7-inch media column before it leaves the system. This second stage naturally absorbs residual CO2 and dissolves extra aragonite, neutralizing the solution and boosting output pH to protect your delicate marine livestock.

Propelled by the high-torque, variable-speed VarioS 4 DC recirculation pump, this unit utilizes a specialized pinwheel impeller and a high-purity ceramic shaft. Operating on safe 24V current via a detached digital controller, the pump drives a reverse-flow fluid layout that lifts water upward from the base of the chamber. This steady pressure keeps heavy media beds in uniform suspension, completely avoiding the clumping, cementing, and anaerobic channeling that plagues flat-bottom reactors. Handcrafted from heavy-wall, optical-grade cast acrylic, the CalReact 3000D stands as the premier choice for pristine chemical stability in high-volume reef displays.

Key Features

  • pH Shielding Secondary Chamber: Degasses excess carbon dioxide, boosting effluent pH while squeezing additional mineral yield out of your aragonite media.

  • Controllable VarioS 4 DC Pump: Offers multiple precise speed profiles and standalone feed-pause delays. Features a 0–10V port for seamless integration with third-party automation networks like the Neptune Apex.

  • CO2 Gas Recirculation: Captures undissolved gas pockets at the primary neck assembly, re-injecting them into the water loop to conserve your bottle supply.

  • Precision Gate Valve Tuning: Includes an industrial-grade effluent micro-gate valve to lock in precise, drift-free daily drip rates.

  • Industrial Quick-Connects: Standard 1/4-inch push-connect interfaces allow for clean plumbing management across feed and effluent paths.

  1. Loosen the upper thumb-flange hardware and lift the sealing lids off both 7-inch cast acrylic cylinders.
  2. Rinse your preferred large-grain coarse aragonite reactor media thoroughly with RO/DI water to wash away fine dust, then distribute it evenly into both columns.
  3. Re-seat the heavy lids, making sure the structural silicone O-ring gaskets rest flush against the acrylic collars, and tighten down the thumbscrews in an alternating pattern.
  4. Insert your electronic pH controller probe into the designated primary chamber compression port and tighten the locking collar securely.
  5. Plumb your 1/4-inch feed supply water line (from a dedicated auxiliary pump or an active aquarium manifold tap) and your regulated CO2 feed line to their respective intake push-connect inputs.
  6. Fill the reactor assembly completely with tank water to push out trapped air pockets, power up your effluent supply line, select your preferred speed setting on the VarioS 4 controller, and connect to a GFCI outlet.
  7. Pro Tips:
  • Coarse Media is Mandatory. Always use large-grain, coarse aragonite media (such as large coral bones or premium coarse chips) inside both towers of the CalReact 3000D. Fine, sandy media will quickly melt down into a dense, muddy paste inside the acidic 6.5 pH environment of the primary tower. This mud will clog the bottom distribution plates, choke water flow, and potentially seize or damage the VarioS impeller.
  • First Tower Monitoring Only. When automating your CO2 gas injection with an electronic controller, ensure your pH probe is mounted exclusively inside the primary chamber port. The primary chamber must maintain an acidic target (typically 6.5 to 6.7) to melt the media. Do not attempt to read or control the gas based on the secondary chamber's pH, as its job is to actively raise those numbers back up before the effluent discharges into your sump.
  • Prevent Effluent Line Clogging. Because the effluent fluid leaving the secondary chamber is saturated with calcium and carbonate ions, small mineral crusts (calcium scaling) can slowly build up inside the tiny 1/4-inch discharge line. Inspect your daily drip rate weekly. Every few months, clear out the lines by blowing a small volume of warm RO/DI water or a mild white vinegar solution through the effluent plumbing to dissolve hidden mineral blockages.
